QUESTION: "Is it necessary for a Christian to pay tithe?"

Pastor's response...

ANSWER: "A: Since you used the word 'necessary' you are really asking if God requires a Christian to pay 10% of their income so they don't get cursed! We would start by defining who a Christian is. A Christian is a citizen of the kingdom of heaven. This kingdom of heaven like every other kingdom has its own economic system that must be sustained by its citizens. In the first prototype kingdom that God established amongst men since the fall of man i.e, the (Jewish nation) it was a theocratic governmental system and Jehovah demanded support for the people for its officers, administration and less privileged through tithes and offering, he commanded them to 'pay' tithe and 'give' offerings in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, we are not commanded to pay tithe, we are commanded to give ourselves WHOLLY to the kingdom. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God..." "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice..." "Yield your members as slaves to Righteousness..." e.t.c (Matthew 6:33, Romans 12:1, Romans 6:13) We don't pay tithe, we pay more than tithe! The Old Testament was a shadow of things to come, then The Lord gave them a commandment of tithing to remind the hard hearted Old Testament Jews that he was their supply, in the New Testament where we know him as Father, we don't need a commandment to pay tithe, we have a commandment that says "love The Lord God, with your heart, soul and might..." (Mark 12:30). Now let me ask you a question? If you have 'given' your life to Jesus (meaning he now owns you completely) how much of your income do you think he is entitled to? In the New Testament, So to the Question should a Christian give tithe? a CHRISTIAN should commit all he/she can of his worldly possessions to a worthy kingdom cause that is reaching souls and discipling people into the kingdom of Christ. Remember Jesus and the young rich ruler, (Luke 18:16-22) who asked Jesus 'What shall I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, keep the commandments! he said,' I have kept them all since my youth' Jesus then looked on him and loved him and said 'You lack one thing, go sell all your goods, give them to the poor, this will become for you treasure in heaven and then come follow me! '..... he couldn't! Jesus counselled us 'lay up for your selves treasures in heaven' and we also see those in the early church sold houses and possessions and laid the proceeds down for the propagation of the gospel and for sharing amongst the needy. You must not give under compulsion or duress; you should willingly give as an act of worship to your king. DO NOT GIVE IN ORDER TO BE BLESSED, Or to Avert a Curse! GIVE BECAUSE YOU ARE BLESSED, and you are a responsible child of the Kingdom! GIVE BOUNTIFULLY, GIVE CHEERFULLY, GIVE WILLINGLY, support your king and his government! Giving ALL of ourselves to Him is all we can afford, but the least that he deserves. I hope this answers your question. "
